Two operators receive each one-metre section through the interlock. The diamond band saw removes a chemistry strip, an isotope stick and a sealed gas archive—without warming the core above −18°C.

At 748.3 metres, glass shards only microns wide match the geochemical signature of the Youngest Toba Tuff. The ash is a timestamp: a violent day around 74,000 years ago, sharp enough to align oceans and continents.

The atmosphere waits in bubbles smaller than a pinhead.

A 22-gram sample is crushed inside a stainless vacuum chamber. Air that last touched the sky 91,400 years ago escapes in a brief silver fizz, then enters the chromatograph.
