Hot shop No. 04 · Deptford Reach
Keep it
moving.
Glass remembers every hesitation. Gather it white-hot, find the center, and breathe a vessel into the few seconds before gravity wins.
Take the pipe ↘Gather & blow · interactive bench
You have one hot minute.
Hold the blow button to inflate. Release to inspect, roll on the marver to correct the axis, then set a neckline with the jacks. Leave the gather alone and it will sag.
The gather is centered. Don’t wait too long.
The making rhythm
Heat. Turn.
Shape. Return.
A 64-second orbit between fire and bench. Miss the return and the glass stops listening.
- 0142 sec
Gather
Two turns in the clear pot, one in amber. A wet newspaper hand finds the center.
- 0218 sec
Marver
Roll on steel without dragging. The skin chills first; the core keeps traveling.
- 0331 sec
Block
Steam lifts the grain of soaked cherrywood around the glass. Never stop turning.
- 0412 hr
Anneal
Twelve hours down from 510°C. Invisible strain leaves one careful degree at a time.

After the fire,
the colour stays.
Small-run vessels blown by the Tuesday night team. Move the cold lamp, then select a piece to read the marks left by its maker.

The quiet work
of cooling.
Hot glass looks finished long before it is safe. Our computer-controlled kiln holds the strain point, then descends through the danger zone with almost absurd patience.

Before you cross the yellow line
The pipe is
always hot.
First-timers are welcome at the bench. Heat deserves attention, not fear: listen to your gaffer, dress for sparks, and keep the turning rhythm.
Never touch the steel beyond the tape.
Say “behind” when crossing the floor.
Cotton, leather shoes, tied-back hair.
If the pipe stops, the glass drops.
