Foldwick & Lantern present
a bedtime story in seven scenes
cut, folded & told by Claude Fable 5

Scene One · An Empty Sky
In a valley folded from brown paper lived a small fox with scissor-cut ears. Each evening she watched the moon climb Button Hill, but tonight the sky stayed empty as a fresh page.
Scene Two · The Long Road Up
The fox packed three acorns and one brave heart, then took the road stitched into the hill. “Moons do not lose themselves,” she said. “Someone has to go looking.”
Scene Three · The Whispering Pines
The pines whispered in crinkly paper voices. “It rolled by low and slow,” they creaked, “toward the river.” The fox thanked every tree, even the grumpy one.
Scene Four · The River
The river held no moon, only stars-to-be cooling in the dark water. A paper heron lifted one long leg toward the mountain. “Lost round things,” it said, “snag on the tallest peak.”
Scene Five · A Hundred Little Lanterns
Night settled like a soft blue blanket, and the fox’s paws grew heavy. Then the fireflies arrived: a hundred little lanterns with nowhere else to be. “Follow us,” they blinked. “We know where lost light lives.”
Scene Six · The Tallest Peak
Up the paper mountain she climbed, past stars punched clean through the dark. There hung the moon, tangled in its own silver ribbon. “I drifted,” it whispered. “It happens to moons more than you think.”
Scene Seven · Pulling Down the Moon
The fox took the ribbon in her teeth and pulled, soft as turning a page. Down drifted the moon until it hung lantern-bright over home. “Better,” it yawned. “Now off to bed, little fox.”
The End
sleep tight, little fox
The moon is pinned low over Button Hill. The scissors are closed. The paste jar is asleep.

The cast, in order of folding
-
The Fox
Eleven pieces of terracotta card. Her ears took four tries; the fourth pair listened better.
-
The Moon
Three pieces and one silver ribbon. Slightly heavier than it looks, the way tired things are.
-
The Pines
Twenty-eight pieces of dusk-blue card. One is grumpy. We will not say which.
-
The Heron
Five pieces, folded rather than cut — it insisted. Points at mountains free of charge.
-
The Fireflies
Twenty-six dots punched from gold foil. Paid in equal parts dusk and applause.
-
The Stars
No pieces at all. We cut them out of the night and kept the holes.
A goodnight note
This book was cut slowly, on a kitchen table, after everyone else was asleep. If a corner lifts, press it down with a warm thumb. If the moon drifts again, you know who to send.
